Last Wednesday, Edmonton's City Council passed a proposal to provide $125 million in public financing for the construction of a new arena downtown (with a further $100 million to come from the provincial or federal government). Understandably, this proposal angered a large number of people.
According to a poll from March "a majority of Edmontonians considered a new downtown arena to be unimportant and three-quarters opposed any public cash for the project." Despite being a significant majority, these voices are not being heard. Wealth, power and privilege are drowning out the voice of the general public. Join us and let City Council know that your voice as a citizen matters, and that you will hold your representatives accountable. If the City fails to uphold basic democratic principles, we will.
